Happy 2024!!

I attended Anime Los Angeles at the beginning of this month, and it was such a blast! I got to see and hang out with some of my favorite people, and met a whole bunch more with whom I’m excited to work with in the near future.

I also got to debut my Marvin (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy) and Kaylee (Firefly) cosplays, shout-out to the photographers who shot with and everyone who stopped and recognized the obscure sci-fi references!

You may have noticed a little change at the top left-hand corner of my site?

I made a new logo!!

The Old Logo

The Spiffy New Logo

I wanted to make something a bit cleaner and more legible, replacing the squiggly handwritten logo.

A couple changes have been made to hopefully improve the site:

  • Alphabetized Shop
    • Patterns and Tutorials in my Shop are now sorted alphabetically by default!
    • This should make it a lot easier to find items based on series name vs randomly being displayed.
    • Not sure why that wasn’t happening in the first place…
  • Portfolio Page
    • Updated and cleaned up my Portfolio once again! I’m trying to make it easier to access and share instead of it just being an assorted collection of all my past projects.
  • About Page
    • Updated my About page, now includes an up-to-date bio.
  • Projects
    • Featured Projects on my Home Page have been updated!

That’s all for now! Look forward to new and exciting projects coming soon!!!

I Built Props for a Kids Show!!

Some people have been wondering where I’ve been for the past 2-3 months…

Welllll, I had a really cool (and paid) opportunity pop up, to, not only build props for, but also be the Assistant Director AND Fight Choreographer for a local youth production!

It was a comedy show in a medieval / fantasy setting, so I had a total blast building all sorts of wacky-wild props.
I’ve never made anything child-sized before, so there was a bit of a learning curve when it came to figuring out the scale of helmets and armor pieces!

I uploaded a whole bunch of photos of all the different props to my shiny new Portfolio, see everything shared over there!

I Made a Portfolio!

Hey hey! I sat down, organized all of my past builds (back through 2018!?), and uploaded them ALL into neat and clean sections of a new portfolio!!

This honestly took SEVERAL DAYS of digging through old Instagram posts and computer files to gather everything together, but hopefully moving forward it will be much easier to add completed projects to the portfolio and show off everything in one place!

Spiffy new portfolio is linked in the image above, on my menu bar at the top of the page, or you can visit it via this link!

I know I’m missing a couple projects due to not having taken many photos, but alas, all I can do is get better about documenting my work moving forward and (hopefully) keeping track of everything.

Introducing: Workshops!

Hello crafters!

Looking for a place to get started building your next cosplay prop? I’m currently writing a series of workshops to help you out!

The target audience for my workshops is novice creators looking to get their feet wet in the world of prop building, but I hope to share tips and tricks that I have found helpful for both beginner and expert builders alike!

These workshops are written from my personal experience constructing props. They will mostly feature techniques for working with EVA foam, but the ideas should be applicable to whatever craft medium you have available or decide to work with!

Right now, I have two workshops published :

Tools of the Trade – focusing on the basic tools you would need to get started building.
Sanding Your Prop – introducing different methods for sanding.

Please feel free to leave a reply below and let me know your thoughts! I’d love to dedicate time to writing more in-depth workshops, so long as the interest is there and people will find them useful. Also, let me know if there’s a specific topic or area of prop building you would like to see me write a workshop for!

Thanks for coming along on this adventure with me,
~Chris

Izanagi’s Burden Rifle from Destiny 2!

Izanagi’s Burden | Exotic Sniper Rifle
~ Destiny 2 ~
Pattern Designed and Built by ChriSekaiCosplay

About :
As an avid fan of Destiny 2 since Year One, and I realized that I didn’t have anything physical to show for it. So I decided to make a pattern for one of my favorite weapons, and then I thought why not? Might as well build it, too!

The Process :
Most of my progress pictures were saved from Instagram stories, please excuse any strange formatting!

I started by printing out my pattern and tracing it onto 10mm EVA foam.

In order to give the long rifle barrel more support, I wanted to run a PVC pipe down the middle. Layers were cut from the foam and sandwiched around my pipe base. I wanted the rifle to detach where the long barrel meets the main body, so I made sure to build it as two separate pieces.

I used a 3/4″ PVC pipe for this build, along with 3/4″ CPVC pipe inside. The CPVC, with a little foam padding, fits snugly inside the PVC, and allows for a simple, no-locks-or-magnets method to slide two pieces together and have them hold securely!

One 3/4″ PVC pipe runs the length of the rifle, a second, short 3/4″ PVC pipe sits at the separation point to keep the rifle upright and positioned correctly, and a 1/2″ PVC pipe splits from the main pipe and provides support for the handle grip!

Knowing the main handle-piece would be the most time consuming, I decided to tackle that first! I cut my pattern up and created layer upon layer of 10mm, 5mm, and 2mm EVA foam detailing.

Edges were sanded smooth using a dremel and sandpaper, and small wooden dowels were used for some of the detail work on the end.

The barrel-piece of the rifle was much more straight-forward. I made a few layers of EVA foam to fully conceal the PVC pipe, then sanded and shaped the barrel to have a nice rounded edge!

I forgot to take progress pics during this section, but I finished up the barrel-piece by creating a simple scope, built the end of the rifle barrel with layers of 10mm foam, and then sanded everything smooth!

Both pieces were then Plastidipped, primed with spray paint (black for the handle-piece, white for the barrel-piece), then details were hand painted using acrylics!

After a thick layer of glossy spray sealant, Izanagi’s Burden was completed! This project took roughly 235 hours (~1 month) from design to completion.

I think the end result was well worth the build time, don’t you? 😊
